Automotive Emissions Analyzers

Automotive emissions analyzers test and measure the toxins being emitted from your car to make sure that your vehicle meets certain standards. These tests come in a variety of formats. Some choices might be better suited to your needs than others.

Why do you need to test for emissions?

Vehicle emissions are the fumes and pollutants that come from your car and the engine when it’s running. These emissions are the result of using a gasoline-powered combustion engine and the fuel it uses. Many governments and countries around the world have standards for emissions and include required testing on vehicles in order to protect human health and the environment. There are many ways to see what your engine and the fuel it is using are producing. Emissions tests and analyzers help measure the amount of pollutants coming from your vehicle.

What types of emissions tests are on done on vehicles?

There are many types of tests that can be performed on vehicles and their engines to test for emissions. Inspection tests work by monitoring pollutants while a vehicle is driving on a track or treadmill. There are also on-board diagnostic tests, which use data from the vehicle’s computer to check for malfunctions in emissions equipment. In addition to these, there are many tests that use technology to focus on specific emissions, like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Other tests analyze the opacity of diesel exhaust gas and measure exhaust volume. Specific tests can be small and portable while inspection tests are larger and provide a lot of informational content.

What types of emissions analyzers are there?

Automotive emissions tests and analyzers test vehicles for various contaminants. These tests can analyze and measure one or more toxins, depending on the product. Many analyzers use a probe that is inserted into the exhaust pipe. You can choose from analyzers such as the following:

  • Smoke meters: These portable devices test the opacity of the automotive diesel exhaust gas.
  • Vehicle mass analysis systems: These systems measure your vehicle’s overall exhaust volume.
  • Gas sensors/analyzers: These sensors can measure toxins such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons. Some provide analysis of one toxin while others have the technology to give analysis data on six or more toxins.
  • On-board systems: These products test for the same emissions as gas sensors, but they are used in real-life automotive situations. They can be used while the vehicle is being driven to monitor emissions levels.
