Everything you need to know about Samsung TV T-Con Boards

Samsung televisions that utilize liquid-crystal display technology (LCD) need T-Con (Timing Control) boards to produce images on the TV screen. Liquid-crystal display televisions require that the originating signal from the outside be adjusted before images can be reproduced. Here are a few things to know about Samsung TV T-Con boards to help you understand how they work and how to replace one.

How is the signal conversion performed?

The incoming broadcast, cable, or satellite signals pass through a scaler before it gets to the display unit. A scaler is a device that is used to convert low-resolution signals into high-resolution by adjusting the pixel sizes, so all the different images being sent to the television come out clear and in a uniform fashion. On televisions using liquid-crystal display technology, the signal needs to be further adjusted to reproduce images. The conversion is done by sending the signal to a T-Con board so the images get stabilized and controlled enough to be reproduced on the televisions.

How can you tell if a T-Con board needs replacing?

You can tell when you need to repair the television and replace the T-Con board when you turn the TV on and get sound, but one of the following three things happens:

  • Error 1: You do not get a picture on your TV.
  • Error 2: You only get a picture on half of the screen.
  • Error 3: You get colored vertical lines across the screen.

How do you choose the right T-Con board?

The T-Con boards are made to fit specific models. You need to know the model and serial numbers for your TV to determine which device will fit your television. These numbers are normally located on a panel on the back or side of the television. Use the numbers to match which device is appropriate to use with your television.

How do you replace a T-Con board?

You have to take off the back panel of the television. The board is connected to the motherboard via cables or ribbons. In some models, the device is made to be part of the LCD panel. If this is the case, the entire LCD panel will have to be replaced in order to repair the television. In other models like Samsung TVs, the board is attached to the metal backside of the screen. In this case, you unscrew the board, remove the cable or ribbons, take it off the television, and replace it with a new one. You have to be very careful not to rip the ribbons or bend the pins on the connectors when removing and replacing ribbons. If you do, the ribbon won't be able to transfer the signal to other parts on the television.
