Leave Laces Behind With the Reebok Instapump Fury

Reebok Instapump Fury Sneakers

When the Reebok Instapump Fury was released in 1994, many critics were skeptical that a running shoe without laces would work. However, the successful release of the Instapump Fury running shoe proved that Reebok’s Pump Technology Full-Foot Chamber System was able to firmly fit the wearer’s foot using Reebok Pump-to-fit technology.

By switching out the midsole for a GraphLite bridge, the high pump sneakers were unbelievably lightweight for the time without compromising support and stability. The GraphLite bridge consisted of a carbon fiber arch bridge positioned at the underfoot to cut down on bulk.

Another key feature of the Instapump Fury is the Hexalite® technology in the heel which consisted of honeycomb-patterned hexagonal lugs covered by a durable layer of thermoplastic urethane. This feature provided exceptional comfort and air cushioning that softened road impact while providing traction and stability.

The unique architecture of the Instapump Fury featured minimal overlays and paneling to provide exceptional ventilation and maintain the light weight of the shoe. While the technology in the Instapump Fury may seem dated, these classic Reebok silhouettes are still sought-after trail sneakers and casual training shoes.

Why is the Instapump Fury a fashion collectible?

While the Instapump Fury was originally released as a performance shoe, its appeal laid in its space-age design, which has made the Fury an icon amongst cult sneaker collectors. The arresting and iconic look of these fashion sneakers didn’t go mainstream immediately, but trend-spotters and aficionados have come to appreciate the anti-modernist appeal of the shoe as well as Instampump Fury’s place in the evolution of footwear.

The radical appearance of the lace-less Pump technology and the extreme highlighter red and yellow colorway of the original 1994 release is seen as a relief from the hyper-minimalism trend in menswear. The Steven Smith designed Instapump Fury represents a "more is better" approach to footwear in line with Raf Simons’ Adidas Ozweego sneakers and Lanvin’s over-colorful hiking lace-adorned running shoes. The shoes first took-off as fashion sneakers in Japan and eventually took off all over Asia with releases such as the “Jackie Chan” (based on a photo of the actor wearing a pair of neon green Pump Furys).

The broad appeal of these unisex sneakers has made them a popular canvas for forward-thinking designers such as Concepts, Bape, Sandro, BorisBidjan Saberi, and Hender Scheme who released an all-leather version that retails at $1,000. The designer BAIT released the popular BAIT toy story sneakers to celebrate the Toy Story franchise with a mismatch of Buzz inspiration for the right and Woody themes on the left.

Is the Fury also an athletic shoe?

The traction, support and cushioning system for this shoe makes it great for casual training, walks and long days on your feet. While the shoe was not designed for any sport in particular, the light weight and tight fit make it work well for most pick-up sports.
