The Nike KD 13: Is 13 KD's Lucky Number?

Nike KD 13 Sneakers

The KD 13 launched on April 10, 2020, with the floral-and-chains Hype colorway (CI9948-600/CI9949-600). For the first time in several years, the KD's retail price increased by $10 to $160. The early- pandemic release was unusual for several reasons. The NBA officially shut down on March 11, 2020, leaving the 2019-20 season in limbo until July 30th.

KD 13 Construction: Cushion, Traction and Lockdown

In many ways, the KD 13 is an evolution of the previous edition, though it's definitely not a straight copy of the 12's silhouette or materials. The +/- 13.5-ounce KD 13 has a tapered fit that fits true to size for all except those with wide feet. Key features on the mid-top chassis include cushioning, traction and support. Here's the breakdown:

  • Cushion: Like the KD 12, the KD 13 has a full-length articulated Air Zoom Strobel that sits directly below the insole. The Zoom unit is heat-scored to create segmented pockets at the right flex points. Nike added a kidney-shaped double-stacked Zoom at the forefoot to up the shoe's responsiveness and added cushioning at the ball of the foot. The combo makes for a plush ride with lots of spring. The thin insole is reminiscent of what's inside the Kobe 6. It has a Styrofoam feel that molds to the shape of the foot, as they're worn to create a truly customized fit.
  • Traction: Nike used an unconventional traction pattern on the KD 13. Most of the rubber is dotted with circular spirals and vertical and horizontal ovals that easily handle movements in any direction. The deep grooves on the offset forefoot Zoom add another layer of traction. Depending on the colorway, there are three different rubber setups — solid, multicolored rubber and translucent/glow. All perform well on indoor and outdoor courts, but the solid rubber grips best. Regardless of the setup, dust remains traction's nemesis, so be prepared to wipe them if things get dirty on the court.

  • Materials: The mesh/textile upper is lightweight and thin. Not exactly premium, it provides good containment. The foam-padded tongue is connected halfway down to an internal bootie, so it stays in place and makes it easy to slide the foot into the shoe. The bootie has Fuse applied in high-wear areas, which improves durability and adds some support. The soft collar is comfortable but considering Durant's Achilles injury, there's surprisingly little padding inside at the heel.
  • Support and Lockdown: The KD 13's ankle support is solid, thanks to the adjustable panels that extend around the heel and attach near the top of the lacing setup. Even though the KD 12's TPU cage and Quad-Axial Flywire are gone, the 13 still provides good support and lockdown. The small TPU extension on the lateral side helps with containment, and the shank plate at the midfoot adds rigidity. The foam midsole is also fairly rigid, and with the added restriction produced by the extended rubber midsole, the KD 13 has a solid foundation.

Nike 13 KD’s Lucky Number

Arenas were empty, and gyms around the world closed. The KD 12 was released a year earlier to great acclaim, but it was relegated to a mostly outdoor existence like so many other things. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant was exactly nine months into his recovery from a devastating Achilles tear and still had another eight to go. With all of that, though, Nike's engine continued to churn as Leo Chang and KD again teamed up to create the 13th edition of Durant's signature shoe.

On December 13, 2020, Durant stepped onto the court for the first time as a Brooklyn Net, wearing #7 on his jersey and a pair of pink Aunt Pearl KD 13s (DC0011-600/DC0012-600) on his feet. It wasn't a Friday but really, KD 13s on the 13th? Lucky for everyone, he finished with 15 points and happily walked off the court.

Design and Colorways of the Nike KD 13

The KD 13 is an attractive mid-cut sneaker. While it's not a breakout design, the shoe has some interesting touches that elevate the look. Nike swooshes appear in several places, including the largest one that crosses over from the textile upper onto the foam midsole. The KD logo sits on the back of the ankle, and a classy "Kevin Durant No. 7" label is sewn onto the tongue. #7 is also embossed on the TPU extension near the lateral side toebox.

There is also an unreleased EYBL Peach Jam and several PEs like Michigan State and Texas that have been seen on eBay in the $300-$500 range. Lucky for you, it's easy to find almost any of the KD 13 colorways at or below the full $160 retail price.
