Mahogany Tables

Mahogany is considered one of the finest woods there is. It is strong enough to be used for furniture, yet easy to work and resists warping and swelling. Mahogany’s beautiful colors, grain, and luster makes it perfect for tables of the highest quality.

What types of mahogany tables are available?

Tables made of mahogany serve multiple purposes. There are mahogany:

  • Dining tables.
  • Coffee tables.
  • Consoles. Traditionally, these tables were attached to the wall. Now, they often come with legs. They’re most often found in the entry hall.
  • End tables. These tables are placed at the end of a sofa, couch, or beside a chair to hold a lamp or other article.
  • Pedestal Tables. This is usually a round or oval top supported by a pedestal, a column, or turning which terminates in splayed feet. These tables are good for putting in awkward empty spaces in a room and are just the thing for holding vases of flowers or houseplants.
  • Game tables. These are made to play board games, chess, cards, or other games. They are often easy to fold up and store when they’re not needed.
  • Sofa tables. For most homeowners, the difference between coffee tables and sofa tables is that the former is put in front of the sofa, and the sofa table, which is a bit higher, is placed behind it.
  • Side tables. These pieces began as serving tables. Now, they are more like end tables.
  • Accent tables. These are tables that go into those awkward areas of a room where there is not space for anything else.
What kind of style are mahogany tables?

  • Hepplewhite: These tables are light and graceful.
  • Queen Anne: Queen Anne tables sport curved legs and curved aprons just beneath the top.
  • Empire: The wood of choice for this kind of furniture is indeed mahogany. It is beautifully carved while sturdy and heavy.
  • Neoclassical Regency: This furniture borrows from the design of the English Regency period, and is often heavy, with dark woods like mahogany or walnut and metal trim.
  • Modern: Ornament in modern furniture is used sparingly, but it can take interesting shapes such as wood carved into S-curves that support the top of the table.
  • Federal: This is an American furniture style founded right after the Revolutionary War. Its most popular motif was the eagle, but other motifs are acanthus leaves and lyres. There is often gilding and brass hardware.
