The Jordan Eclipse: a Lifestyle Sneaker With an Edge

Jordan Eclipse Black and Grey

Jordan boasts a legacy of ground-breaking basketball-focused shoes, of which the Air Jordan franchise is the most iconic. But with sneakers becoming everyone's default footwear beyond the court and the gym, the brand branched out into the field of "lifestyle" sports shoes — comfortable, casual sneakers designed for daily life and light training rather than a specific sport. Its first such offering, the Jordan Future, dropped in 2014.

The follow-up to the Jordan Future, the Jordan Eclipse, was released in 2015 and likewise promised unparalleled comfort, an attractive design and state-of-the-art technology. Its elegant, clean lines, free of gimmicks, create a minimalist look. The Jumpman logo on the heel nods to the Air Jordan III, one of the brand's most successful sneakers, and its emblematic athlete, basketball legend Michael Jordan. True to the Jordan Brand's tradition of innovation, the Jordan Eclipse offers features drawn from performance footwear. Among other things, it leverages Nike's Air technology. Zoom Air units are pouches filled with pressurized air that, when placed strategically under the foot, cushion impact and boot responsiveness. And a herringbone pattern under the outsole enhances the Jordan Eclipse's grip.

Jordan Eclipse Colorways, Collaborations and Collectibility

The Jordan Brand continues to celebrate Michael Jordan's legacy, something that's clear when you look at the brand's focus on the color red — one of the Chicago Bulls' signature colors and the team Michael Jordan played for and led to six NBA championship titles. The Jordan Eclipse continues this proud tradition with several colorways that play with textures and details for unique, eye-catching looks.

The Gym Red/Gym Red colorway (724368-600) of the leather Jordan Eclipse is as scarlet as it gets. Its upper, tongue, laces, piping and soles are all the same brilliant shade. The Gym Red /Light Orewood Burn (724368-624) colorway contrasts a flamboyant suede upper with a gray outsole. Finally, the Gym Red "Chukka" (881453-601) Jordan Eclipse displays an all-red silhouette that makes the best of the upper's textured finish and is guaranteed to turn heads. It's one of the sneaker's most successful colorways. In March 2021, its asking price on eBay was around $150.

Jordan Eclipse White and Grey

In the summer of 2016, Jordan released two limited-edition Jordan Eclipse colorways due to its collaboration with SoleFly — the trendy Miami-based sneaker boutique is a regular Jordan partner. The SoleFly x Jordan Eclipse Arctic Orange colorway (893513-805) is meant to conjure up the planet Mars, but its pinkish pastel tint is also reminiscent of Miami's iconic South Beach hues. Its counterpart, the SoleFly x Jordan Eclipse Desert Orange colorway (893513-801), shows off a sunny, copper-toned upper atop a white sole. Because these were limited editions, you'll need to be patient to score a pair, and you'll probably need to spend close to the sneakers' original MSRP of $200.

Aside from some bold color schemes such as the ones mentioned above, the Jordan Eclipse colorways typically match its design — the focus is on a sleek, classic look. Case in point, the Dust Grey (724010-003) Jordan Eclipse is all about light, subtle hues. The resale value of the Dust Grey Jordan Eclipse is often close to its MSRP of $110.

An Eclipse Plate Treasured by Athletes

The Jordan Eclipse's most coveted and defining feature is the Eclipse Plateone of the Jordan Brand's signature innovations. This technology, first introduced in the Air Jordan XXXIV, combines hi-tech thermoplastic plates with the Zoom Air unit to make the transition from midfoot to forefoot smoother. The result is more explosive step-offs and greater propulsion. Needless to say, the Eclipse Plate gives the Jordan Eclipse some serious credibility in terms of performance, making it more than a lifestyle sneaker.

One Shoe, Several Designs

The Jordan Eclipse originally featured a canvas upper. It gave the shoe a relaxed summer vibe and also improved its breathability. You don't need to be a diehard sneakerhead to know that these days, breathability has become a major selling point for sneakers. The use of textile also makes for a lighter shoe. This original version was followed by a Jordan Eclipse that showed off suede on the upper for a velvety, luxurious touch.

In late 2016, a third iteration of the Jordan Eclipse was introduced. It boasted the same hi-tech features as the previous Jordan Eclipse — Zoom Air units under the heel, Eclipse Plates, Neoprene tongue and herringbone-patterned sole — but with a mid-top "Chukka" cut reminiscent of an ankle boot. The upper of the first Jordan Eclipse "Chukka" was made of a textured woven material that gave the sneaker a striking yet minimalist finish. The Jordan Eclipse "Chukka" also exists in a leather version.
