Boost Bass Notes Using an AudioQuest Subwoofer Cable

The subwoofer is an important part of any home entertainment system. Designed for the reproduction of low-pitched sounds, the sub amplifies the strong bass notes used in everything from big-budget action movies to your favorite rap song. If you're adding a subwoofer to your home theater setup, you may need an AudioQuest subwoofer cable.

What is the purpose of an AudioQuest subwoofer cable?

Subwoofer cables are used to connect subwoofer speakers with an audio amplifier or receiver. On one end, the cable is plugged into the receiver's sub output. On the other end, the cable is plugged into the subwoofer's LFE (low-frequency effect) input.

What are AudioQuest subwoofer cables made of?

To make subwoofer cables, AudioQuest uses materials such as:

  • Silver: Each conductor used in an AudioQuest subwoofer cable is silver-plated. Conductors are either constructed of copper or silver, and silver helps to minimize jitter and distortion.
  • Polyethylene air-tube: These cables need to be properly insulated, but when solid materials are too close to the conductor it can absorb energy and cause distortion and loss. That's why AudioQuest uses polyethylene air-tube insulation. The polyethylene causes little distortion, and air does not absorb energy.
  • Metal and carbon-loaded synthetics: To prevent radio frequency interference, AudioQuest cables are equipped with a noise dissipation system made of metal and carbon-loaded synthetics.
  • Hanging-silver and pure red copper: If the connection between the conductor and the plug gets too hot, it can compromise audio quality. To mitigate this issue, the brand uses a cold-welded system to connect the two components. Copper and/or silver paste is used at the point of contact.
What audio quality features do these cables have?

AudioQuest subwoofer cables have features such as:

  • Dielectric bias: Because insulation can interfere with signals, cables need to be equipped with technology that prevents the insulation from absorbing energy. AudioQuest cables accomplish this via a dielectric bias system, which creates an electrostatic field that polarizes insulation molecules.
  • Triple-balance: AudioQuest cables have three conductors. This means that each cable is triple-balanced and ensures that conducting pathways have minimal distortion. Because of this three-part geometry, these cables can be used in conjunction with RCA or XLR plugs.
What sizes are available?

AudioQuest subwoofer cables are available in several lengths, such as:

  • 6.6 feet
  • 9.8 feet
  • 16.4 feet
  • 26.25 feet
  • 65.6 feet
What are some troubleshooting tips for installation?

Once you've selected subwoofer cables, it's time to connect your sub to the rest of your home entertainment equipment. Here are a few troubleshooting tips:

  • Raise it up: When a sub is placed on the ground, the ensuring vibrations can interfere with audio quality. Try placing your unit on a raised platform.
  • Check the phase switch: Subs need to be in phase with the stereo. If your bass isn't up to snuff, try changing the position of the phase switch on the back of the sub.
